Down Syndrome (21 trisomy) is one of the most frequent genetic disease in newborns, a chromosomal abnormality that appears when the 21st chromosome is one more than normal.
IN addition to its characteristic appearance, Down Syndrome includes delays in intellectual and physical development and complications of other diseases.
Babies with Down Syndrome have a variety of visual characteristics.The head is small and flattened at the back of the head, the face is broad and lankly, and the prominent features of the face are particularly noticeable,
such as the pinched eyes and low nose. There is often excess skin on the back of neck. Ears are small, round and located low on the head.
The fingers of the hands are short, with only two joints on the little fingers instead of the usual three, and they are seen bent inward. There is often only one horizontal crease in the palm of the hand.
Fingerprints may have a frequent pattern that runs horizontally instead of in a circle.
Another characteristic is a generally short stature and a high risk of obesity.
Intelligence quotient (IQ) is difficult to generalize due to individual differences, but if the IQ of a child is 100, the average value of a child with Down syndrome is about 50.
IN terms of behavior, lack of attention, hyperactivity, and autistic behavior (such as repeating the same thing over and over) are often observed, and a relatively high risk of depression is also known.
About half of all cases of Down syndrome are complicated by heart disease. The most common diseases are in which the walls dividing the chambers of the heart are not built properly
(e.g., endocardial floor defects and ventricular septal defects).
Other common complications include gastrointestinal diseases such as duodenal atresia and cloacal anus, which in some cases may require surgery immediately after birth. Complications such as strabismus,
deafness, and thyroid dysfunction are also common. Weak muscular strength also weakens the ability to swallow, making it difficult for the baby to drink milk or eat baby food.

Diagnosis of Down Syndrome is made by a blood test to check for chromosomal abnormalities. In the case of a fetus, fetal chromosome testing is performed byu amniocentesis and chorionic villus examination of the mother. However, since there is a risk of miscarriage with amniotic fluid and chorionic villus tests, these tests are often performed when the possibility of chromosomal abnormalities is indicated by screening tests such as ultrasound or NIPT (new-type prenatal diagnosis).

Q.I am wondering if there is a charge for the amniotic fluid test after NIPT…
A. HIRO CLINIC has a “Mutual Aid Society” system. Pregnant women with a positive result will be subsidized up to 200,000 yen (tax included) for the cost of amniotic fluid test. All tests related to amniotic fluid testing are covered. There is no designation of the institution performing the amniotic fluid test. A. There are other types of Down syndrome, such as Patou syndrome with one extra 13th chromosome and Edwards syndrome with extra 18th chromosome. The reason is that with the other chromosomes, the probability of being born with Down syndrome is much lower. Originally, the chance fo being born with Down syndrome was said to be 1% in the 40s.
