You Can Get Medicover’s NIPT Test Domestically

Hiro Clinic has a contract with Medicover.

Medicover’s NIPT test requires advanced technology, including international patents, compared to traditional NIPT tests. In addition to detecting four types of microdeletion syndromes, it can also detect 228 types of severe recessive genetic diseases. In Southeast Asia, the Tokyo Health Laboratory, in partnership with Hiro Clinic, provides technical support. Hiro Clinic conducts the tests domestically, so the results come out faster.

We have experienced specialists, including obstetricians and gynecologists certified by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology and clinical geneticists certified by the Japanese Society of Human Genetics, to meet various needs of pregnant women. Additionally, we expand the scope of tests and provide high-level technology.

What is Early NIPT?

Until now, Hiro Clinic has conducted the NIPT test after 10 weeks, when there are worldwide publications on the test and its validity is guaranteed.
When the Tokyo Health Laboratory, which carries out the tests at the hospital, carried out random tests on pregnant women of less than 10 weeks without checking the number of weeks, the test results were available for all of them.

NIPT has been recommended after 10 weeks, when a sufficient amount of foetal DNA (FF ‘Fetal fraction’) in maternal blood is considered detectable.
This clinical experiment at the Tokyo Sanitary Laboratory proved that a sufficient amount of foetal DNA (FF ‘Fetal fraction’) in maternal blood can be detected at less than 10 weeks.

Therefore, Hiro Clinic offers Early NIPT for pregnant women under 10 weeks, when the foetal heartbeat has been confirmed.
However, to ensure the accuracy of the test, a second test is strongly recommended after 10 weeks.

This test is suitable for individuals with close relatives who have X-linked recessive inheritance. What is microdeletion syndrome?

Microdeletion syndrome is a condition caused by the deletion of a gene at a specific position in a chromosome.

As the name micro implies, they range in size from 500 000 bases in the smallest cases, and are usually caused by deletions of two to three million bases. The size and position of the deletion determines the severity of the condition and the various symptoms associated with developmental delay, such as mental retardation. Many microdeletion syndromes are also said to be spontaneous and occur regardless of maternal age.

This means that it is not always worth testing in pregnant women of any age, young or old.

Prader-Willi syndrome

It is known that the condition is caused by a missing or duplicated gene in part of chromosome 15. It is characterised by obesity, short stature and strabismus, and delayed language and motor development. It is not said to be hereditary.

Angelman’s syndrome

Like Prader-Willi syndrome, this condition is caused by a missing gene in part of chromosome 15. It is characterised by frequent smiling, a large mouth, a pointed chin and severe mental retardation.

Amniotic fluid

Although NIPT is a highly accurate test, it is not a ‘definitive’ test and it is recommended that an amniotic fluid test is taken to confirm the results.

For positive chromosomes 1-22 autosomes or sex chromosomes (all chromosomes), assistance is provided for G-band and qf-PCR tests.
For all autosomal whole-region partial deletions and duplication diseases, definitive testing by G-band, qf-PCR, microarray and FISH tests is required.

Amniotic fluid testing support not covered: those who choose Basic Plan H are not eligible for amniotic fluid testing support.

A doctor will examine the patient if they wish to be examined (after the NIPT test).
A consultation on the day of the NIPT test is included in the test fee, but a consultation fee of JPY 4,000 (JPY 4,400 incl. tax) is charged for a consultation on a day other than the test day.

About Cancellation

Please contact us at least one working day before the inspection date by telephone or using the contact form below.
Changes to appointment dates and times must also be notified at least one working day before the inspection date.
Also, if it is difficult to come to the clinic due to severe morning sickness or other reasons on the day of the visit, please be sure to call the clinic to discuss the situation.

If the test result is an error

If there is an error in the result, the test will be retested free of charge, but only if there is an error in the technical aspects, such as a low blood sample volume.
This is because the Hiro Clinic NIPT has never had an error in the results and in the event of an error, the testing company has said that there is little point in retesting.
We do not recommend retesting as it is likely to produce the same error.

NIPT is an accurate test with a sensitivity of 99.9% and specificity of 99.90% (median 21st trisomy), but is not a definitive test. If a positive or a decision withheld is followed by a test to confirm the result (amniotic fluid or chorionic villus test).
The test requires proof of current pregnancy. Please bring your maternity record book and an echo-photograph.
