Post-birth brother identification

Postnatal sibling testing is a DNA test to determine if a genetic relationship exists between two or more siblings. This is done when a sibling relationship is in doubt or to resolve legal or familial issues. Sibling identification can be used to confirm blood relations between siblings even when the father or mother is unknown or the parents are not present.

Purpose of Postnatal Sibling Assessment

Sibling appraisals are used in a variety of situations.

  1. Inheritance issues: confirming sibling relationships can help confirm inheritance rights and resolve legal issues.
  2. Family Confirmation: Sibling Identification is useful for scientific proof of familial relationships.
  3. In the absence of a parent: Even if the father or mother is already deceased, a sibling test can confirm the genetic relationship.

Appraisal Structure

Sibling identification is usually done by analyzing short chain repeat (STR) sequences. Since siblings inherit genetic information from both parents, some of the genes will match if the parents share the same parents. By examining this match rate, sibling relationships can be determined.

  • Whole-blood sibling testing: When parents share the same parents, the genetic match rate for siblings is higher.
  • Half-blood sibling test: When only one parent (father or mother) is shared, the match rate of genetic information is not as high as for full-blood siblings, but a certain percentage of the genetic information will match.

Flow of Appraisal

  1. Sample collection: A DNA sample is collected from the person to be authenticated. Usually, a swab is used to collect cells from the oral cavity, with little pain or burden.
  2. DNA Analysis: Collected DNA is analyzed by a specialized laboratory, which analyzes the STR region to determine the genetic match between siblings.
  3. Determination of results: Based on DNA match rates, we determine if there is a full-blood sibling, half-blood sibling, or no genetic relationship. Usually, very high match rates are obtained for full-blood siblings, and certain match rates are also found for half-blood siblings.

Accuracy of Appraisal

Sibling testing is somewhat more complicated than parent-child testing because there are fewer genetic matches. However, with highly accurate STR analysis, it is possible to determine whether a sibling is a full-blood or half-blood sibling with a probability of 99% or higher.

Privacy and Security

Privacy is strictly protected in sibling appraisals. Samples and results used in the appraisal will not be disclosed to third parties and will be used securely for legal proceedings or personal reasons.

Usage scenarios for appraisals

  • Inheritance and legal proceedings: useful when proof of sibling relationship is needed to resolve inheritance rights or legal issues.
  • Family security: scientific proof of siblinghood can help to resolve insecurities and provide a sense of security among family members.
  • In the absence of a parent: If a parent is already deceased or the parent-child relationship cannot be confirmed, a sibling test can be used to confirm the genetic relationship.
